I made the rash decision to tackle one of the stumps up behind the shed a few days ago. Man what a beast! It’s taken me 3 days on and off to get it down to the central root. This one was a lot greener, wetter, and twist grained than any of the previous stumps I’ve tackled. It must have only been cut down a few years ago. Anyway, that’s as far as I’m going with it, I’ll just fill in the hole and put down a bit of grass seed. It may be a few days before I tackle the other one there.
The ground here has about 30 cm of sandy loam on top, then another 10 cm or so of river sand and gravel, then hard clay.
First day of winter here, we have been having a bit of drizzle over the past few days, and have some more cold mornings coming up this week. I think I can handle it OK, I have my possum fur socks. I found a box that had all my good winter gloves and mittens, scarves , and beanies in it. I was wondering where they were. I also found my very thick hand knitted Aran wool cardigan which now might get some use. I also have the knitted wool herders cardigan I got in Saltillo, Mexico when I was working there.

They are lifting some more of the restrictions here in Tasmania this week, we may even be able to go for a pub lunch soon. A lot of restaurants are already open with limited numbers of patrons, but you need a booking. It’s been 16 days without a new case of Covid-19 here, only 5 active cases in the North West, 2 of those in hospital. They are still having small outbreaks in Victoria and NSW, plus some in WA. They let a ship in from the middle east and nearly all the crew have it, but they are being quarantined. Total deaths in Australia are still at 103.
It’s shocking there have been 105,000 deaths in the U.S. and nearly 1,700 in Texas. All of our relatives there are OK though. Now they are having to deal with all the civil unrest that followed yet another brutal murder of an African American by a police officer. It had to happen sooner or later, the U.S. is such a f’d up place. Millions without proper health care, living in abject poverty, low paid minimum wage jobs, a militarised trigger happy police force, racism, racism, racism. Meanwhile they vote for huge bailouts to corporations, give tax cuts to the wealthiest, while Trump, his cronies, and the Republicans plunder the country.
We are so thankful every day that we don’t live there.
