The weather has been generally quite cool, with a fair bit of rain, but there are enough sunny days that I can get out and do stuff that needs doing, even though I have to wear my big gumboots when I go out in the back paddock.
I have been working on the garden preparing the vegetable beds for planting, John sent me some Giant Butter Swede seeds and I still have some turnip and red cabbage I need to plant. The radish and carrots are coming up, but no sign of the beetroot yet. I also want to plant a bunch of dwarf broadbean soon.
I cut up part of the dead tree down by the ditch that fell over during the night, and am cutting the roots around the other part that is still partially alive. A couple more to go, and then a stiff breeze will probably bring it down. The wood is so rotten that you couldn’t burn it inside, so I’m using it on the bonfire I’m building. I think that will be a good spot for some of my tea trees – Melaleucas.

There have been no cases of Covid-19 at all for about a month here in Tasmania, and no new cases for at least 50 days. In Victoria it is a different story, they have implemented another 6 week lock down for metropolitan Melbourne including the Mornington Peninsula. It’s gotten a bit out of control, with over 100 new cases a day and a few more deaths. Victoria has closed its borders for the first time in over 100 years, at the time of the Spanish Flu pandemic. Total deaths for Australia are now 106 after it was going so well. It doesn’t look like we will be allowing people in from the mainland for a while.
Apparently it all started due to a poorly implemented quarantine system, they hired private security companies, who then sub contracted security guards with very little coronavirus training and no protective equipment. I suppose this is pretty minor compared to what is happening in the U.S. with 2,700 dead in Texas and over 131,000 dead overall.
