We took a drive up to a place called Habitat Plants the other day, a native plant nursery about an hour’s drive away and got a variety of tube stock plants. They are in a 3″ long tube and quite a bit cheaper than buying from the retail outlets. We ended up with 20 of various kinds, mostly bird attracting with some that thrive in wet, boggy conditions like we have in our back paddock. We are planning to put an order in to another place east of here called Woodlea Nursery which has a wider range available. We are thinking of getting a big tray of 40 Blackwood trees which also work well in wet areas and could be valuable timber in about 20 years or so. The big trees out in the middle are blackwood, maybe 30 years old, and the flat area is where I want to plant some more but will trim the branches as they grow to get a straighter tree. There are also quite a few other things on their list that look interesting, and it’s a pretty inexpensive way to get a lot of different plants started at once. They will take a few years to grow, but we could get more mature plants and put them in whenever we want. The priorities are to screen off the neighbour’s workshops a bit more, populate the boggy areas out in the back paddock, and have some more nice bird attracting shrubs up close where we can see them.
I’ve downloaded their stock lists, price list and order form and am working on an order either for delivery, or for us to drive up and collect. It’s only about an hour and a half away but a lot of steep winding roads so better when the weather improves. I have a few photos of the ones I have already put in.
