It was a very dry summer and we lost about half the tube stock we put in last winter. This was mainly in the section between us an the neighbour as that seems to dry out the most. We bought about 20 new ones in 14 cm pots, mainly fast growing types like Lilli Pilli and lemon scented tee tree, plus a few others. We planted the first lot out to replace all the ones that had died where we were trying to grow a screen to block out the view of some of the old cars, etc. Next we replaced all those that had died that were designed to block the view of the neighbour’s workshop, sheds, and driveway. Finally, I dug up some of the stuff that was growing on the nature strip that had been mowed over a couple of times. I figured they were pretty hardy, and some would survive.
I got a nice hand forged digging tool and I am cutting 40 cm disks for turf, flipping them, and then digging out a small square in the centre to plant the pots. Then put a bunch of my mulch around them and put on a plastic guard to protect them from the wallabies. I’ll water them for a couple of weeks and with the occasional rain most should survive before summer hits. This time I am thinking of putting in a drip system to keep them all alive.
